With an investment approximately 50 million TL, Uyguner Leather and Jelyap s starting halal gelatin and collagen production in Balıkesir with Gelner. The global sector size of gelatin and collagen, which is known as the raw material of sugary products in food, is 4 billion dollars. 90 percent of the production in the new factory will be for export.
With its 85 years of experience in the leather industry, Uyguner Deri, one of the leading manufacturers in Turkey, and Jelyap, which has scientific studies and investments in gelatin and collagen for about 15 years, established Turkey's first and only halal leaf gelatin and collagen factory. The factory, which will be built in Balıkesir Gonen with an investment of approximately 50 million TL, will work to get a larger share of the 4 billion dollar global gelatin and collagen marketshare.
While talking about the subject, Burak Uyguner, Chairman of the Board of Gelner Gıda, stated, “The main purpose of our new investment is to make better use of leather and to produce a food raw material imported by Turkey in our country. Moreover, we will work hard to make our country an exporter country in this field. In partnership with Jelyap, we will produce on an open area of 22 thousand square meters, 10 thousand square meters of which is an indoor area in Balıkesir Gönen. We have made an investment of approximately 50 million TL.
Unlike all manufacturers on a global and local scale, we aim to produce bioactive products of protein, from meat and dairy products to value-added derivatives of collagen, to agricultural applications. Huge imports are made in this field in our country. With this aim to prevent this with this investment.”
Gelner Co-Founder and Member of the Board of Directors, Serhat Uğur Başyiğit, pointed out the global growth of the leaf gelatin and collagen industry which is 4 billion dollars; “The volume of such a large market in our country is around 150 million dollars. We aim to export a raw material that has been imported until today. We want to export from Gonen to Europe, America, Russia, Southeast Asia and China. Food is very sensitive. The health factor comes first. Investments in this field in Turkey make manufacturers advantageous in terms of traceable, hygienic and quality raw materials.” Başyiğit said.
Stating that capital alone will not be enough in the production of leaf gelatin and collagen, Başyiğit said, “Jelyap has years of knowledge, scientific research and a vision on this subject. That's why we named it a biotechnological investment. Social responsibility, sustainability and efficiency are our three basic principles. As raw material, we can talk about a size of 4 billion dollars on a global basis, but on the bigger Picture this could reach up to 20 billion dollars. This investment will be an important step for our country to move from being an importer to an exporter in an important raw material of food.”
